Hot Honey Buttered Rum

Hot Honey Buttered Rum

There are two approaches to the holiday season. One involves hot buttered rum and Netflix. The other is cold, stressed, and overly sober.
If you haven’t tried hot buttered rum, you may wonder about the combination of butter with any beverage. But you’re in for a treat. It consists of a mixture of winter spices, sugar, and unsalted butter, to which you add rum and hot water. The result is flavorful, warming, and a little creamy.
We substitute wildflower honey for the sugar, deepening the flavor and the silky feel. We also like adding just a touch of cream if you have it (you could even substitute a tablespoon of ice cream).

Ingredients: (for 2 drinks):

  • 4 oz. unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup wildflower honey
  • 3/4 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tbsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tbsp ground clove
  • 1/4 tbsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 oz. hot water (per drink)
  • 1.5 oz. aged or spiced rum (we like Plantation aged rum)
  • 1 tbsp heavy cream (per drink)

In a bowl, mix the softened butter, honey, spices, and vanilla thoroughly. It should look like a dark paste. Taste at this point to check for balance; add more of whatever it needs. Heat the water to simmer. Add paste, rum, cream, and water to your mug, and stir it up.

Enjoy,
